The Pros and Cons of a Virtual Assessment

by Ged Charette | Jun 11, 2026 | The Moving Process, Moving Tips

Any mover can provide an estimate; for example: on most local moves the charges are based on an hourly rate, multiply the time by the rate and you have an estimate; this may not, however, provide you with an accurate assessment of the potential charges for your move.

Where to Start

The first step is gathering information: You have questions and the moving company needs information in order to correctly answer those questions. The contact form on our website is designed to provide the basic information that any mover needs, in order to assess the scope of your project!

Information Answers Questions

Specific information allows for more detailed answers. We ask for your current address, where do you live now? As well as the new address, where are you moving to? This specific information allows us to accurately assess the parameters involved in your move. We use google maps to determine the travel time to and from the job as well as to the new location. We may also use Zillow or Realtor.com (if your home is listed) to see pictures of the house and some of the items being moved. This is the preliminary assessment and not a substitute for the in-home visual survey; a virtual survey is helpful yet often does not portray an accurate scope of the project; access to the home may be distorted by the camera angle and items in a closet or basement may be completely overlooked. Our in-home actual assessment is the most effective way to provide a detailed plan and precise written estimate of the charges for your move. Careful consideration for you, your home and your belongings are all essential aspects of our moving process; we’ll walk you through the steps of planning, packing and preparing for your next move.

More information More answers

The next question is a bit more ambiguous: how many rooms of furniture do you have to move? More specifically, what is involved in your move? The number of rooms is an indication of the size of your home as well as the overall volume of the goods. The size of the home can be a factor in how long it takes to load or unload the truck; the volume of goods is the correlation to the size of the truck; to what fits on the truck. The charges for Long Distance Moves are usually based on the weight and volume of goods.

Do you have a piano or any other unusual items? Unusual items often require additional manpower and specialized equipment. We want to be well prepared in order to avoid delays or hidden charges.

Are you planning on doing any of the moving yourself? Most folks actually do move themselves. Our process is designed around a cooperative effort: we provide the materials and equipment as well as the experience and expertise; you join in as little or as much as is comfortable in order to facilitate the process and meet your budget.

Working together

That level of cooperation starts with a conversation and an in person meeting.

A virtual survey just can’t portray the conditions and connection leading to a successful move. Working together requires a comfortable connection; we want to be there for you.

What it all means for you

A sensible assessment and estimating process is another key component to a successful and stress free move. Planning, packing and preparing are also elements of the process. Detailed conversation followed by deliberate and methodical action has become our proven method to an efficient, effective and economical, trouble free move.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get an estimate for my upcoming move?

We start by gathering information, with a few basic questions;

  • Where are you moving from and to?
  • When are you planning on moving?
  • How many rooms of furniture do you have to move?
  • Are you doing your own packing of the small items?

We also do some virtual legwork using google maps or a home listing website.

The initial conversation is a critical first step, if you are comfortable with the process we schedule an in-home assessment and provide a written estimate for you.

Why does it sound so overwhelming?
