Storage in Transit: When Why and How

by Ged Charette | Jul 1, 2026 | The Moving Process, Timing of the Move

Storage in transit is how we bridge the gap when unforeseen circumstances put two weeks between “the old place and the new”. Storage in transit or SIT is the term that movers use for the service provided when your moving dates don’t line up. Planning for this type of circumstance eliminates the stress and risk of going into storage.

What is it?

The purpose of SIT:

Storage in transit is short-term storage by design. We use it to facilitate a move, not to warehouse your things indefinitely. Perhaps your closings are not simultaneous or maybe a newly constructed home is not yet ready, or you need some additional time for painting or remodeling. We’ll hold your goods in our safe and secure warehouse and make the delivery at your convenience.

AAGGO Movers does not provide long term or permanent storage; we are happy to deliver your belongings to a storage facility or warehouse of your choice.

Why liability is the difference

The rules and regulations for short term storage (sit) and for long term storage (permanent storage) vary. SIT is covered under the Bill of Lading for your move; while permanent storage is covered through a bailee’s agreement. The legal speak is the difference in how an insurance company would handle any claims for loss or damage. AAGGO Movers goes above the legal requirement in providing protection for your goods through our insurance carrier. We are well versed and can answer any questions you may have. Our proven process ensures your protection, satisfaction and peace of mind.

Renovations and Remodeling

Home renovations such as floor refinishing also may require some form of storage; this type of move to our facility would also be considered SIT. Other alternatives may also be suitable such as stacking professionally in your garage or staging a POD in your driveway. We can advise you on the most efficient and economical options to facilitate your project.Your homeowners policy may also provide protection for your goods while in short term storage.

How Long

Storage in transit, by definition is limited to 180 days( 6 months)  though there can in some cases by an extension. Long term storage is for an indefinite period of time(permanent). These are actually two different forms of service and proper planning and preparation will usually determine your specific needs. The right process eliminates the stress of unforeseen circumstances and mitigates the anxiety of any associated risks.
